The heel of Italy is also a region with a strong historical and artistic imprint, whose first human settlement dates back to 250,000 years ago. Puglia has been a conquered land and has seen a succession of peoples and civilisations who have left their testimonies among which: Messapi, Dauni, Peuceti, Greeks, Romans, Normans, Swabians, Angevins, Aragonese and Bourbons. Full of churches and historic buildings, dating back to the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque, Puglia’s artistic heritage is openly visible but also boasts many and prestigious museums and archeological sites. Puglia has three sites which are included on the list of World Heritage Sites: Castel del Monte, Trulli of Alberobello, Santuario San Michele Arcangelo.
